USED: Boston Scene Report $3.99 Boston Scene Report is a rousing and muscular comp from longstanding punk imprint TKO. It’s the first installment of a planned city-by-city scene survey, and proves to be a formidable opening act. The set features two songs each from Suspect Device, Tommy and the Terrors, the A-Team, and Fast Actin Fuses, all four strong entries in the thriving Boston-area punk scene. If Device’s material is the most melodic here (especially the searing street punk of the Dropkick Murphys-ish opener “Life We Lead”), that doesn’t mean the Terrors’ hardcore screed “Out Tonight,” or the A-Team’s two scabrous blasts are any less affecting. Go ahead, try saying something disparaging about the Team during their furious cover of Mot? rhead’s “Iron Fist.” The Fuses close out the festivities by mixing some shards of metal into their inflamed punk wound — their “Feel the Haight” sort of sounds like Guns N’ Roses’ “Nighttrain” if you squint or drink too much. Scene Report is too brief — TKO might want to expand the play list to three, instead of two songs per band. But its brevity doesn’t dull its ferocity. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide |

USED: Embrace the Gutter $3.99 Daytona Beach metalheads the Autumn Offering may have worked hard to establish their own sound on their debut, Revelations of the Unsung, originally issued in 2003 and re-released as an enhanced disc by Victory in 2006. The way they’ve done it is to embrace the music of their heroes, from Guns N’ Roses to Slayer, Metallica and early Iron Maiden to Emperor and other black metal acts — musically, not lyrically. If anything, the lyrics these Southerners spout have more in common with political punk rock than anything else; a comment they won’t take as a compliment. Whatever. These guys can play everything. Check out the contrast of styles in “The Yearning” alone, from driving thrash metal to melodic solos drenched in early-’90s Brit metal. It’s flow that counts when people play as widely divergent styles as this. And Autumn Offering have it, each track seamlessly blasts into the next: check out the way the aforementioned flows stylistically into “Ghost,” which even has traces of Thin Lizzy in its bridge riff! The stomp, snarl, and roar of “One Last Thrill” is the rocking-est thing on the set and just screams from start to finish. Vocally, fans of screamed, low-end guttural wailing will dig the proceedings, but on this track, it’s almost a chant, As for nu-metal, these young cats have it down. USED: Iron Flag $4.99 Even when it seemed they were tearing apart from in-group miscommunication and a welter of baffling solo albums, the Wu-Tang Clan came together again like Voltron for another excellent full-length. Expanding on the strengths of their third album, The W, Iron Flag focuses squarely on the Wu’s immense twin strengths: bringing together some of the best rappers in the business, and relying on the best production confederacy in hip-hop (led by RZA) to build raw, hard-hitting productions. Nothing brings a group together better than invasion from outside, and even though the flag they’re raising on the cover is their own, Wu-Tang respond to the terrorist attacks of 9/11 with guns blazing — Ghostface Killah puts it simply, “Together we stand, divided we fall/Mr. Bush sit down, I’m in charge of the war!” The production is rough and ruddy, much more East Coast than their last two full-lengths (both of which were recorded in Los Angeles). Original East Coast head Flavor Flav even makes an appearance on “Soul Power (Black Jungle),” though he doesn’t even attempt to trade rhymes with the heaviest crew in hip-hop. (Instead, RZA indulges him by running the tape on an extended reminiscence with Flav and Method Man talking about growing up on Long Island.) The single “Uzi (Pinky Ring),” “In the Hood,” and “Ya’ll Been Warned” are all excellent tracks with excellent raps and, though the vaguely familiar horn samples driving most of them sure weren’t tough to record, RZA deserves a lot of credit for keeping the production simple. Even while most rappers have turned R&B overnight, Wu-Tang are really the only ones left in the hardcore game who sound like they’re in it for more than money or prestige. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide |

USED: Light from Above $3.99 More young rock bands in the early 2000s are looking toward rock from the ’70s and ’80s for musical inspiration, and while it’s nice to hear the genre’s legends influencing a new generation, there’s always the danger that young new bands will mistake appreciation for appropriation. Happily, that’s not the case with Black Tide. On their debut, Light from Above, Black Tide manage to incorporate sounds from Iron Maiden, early Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, and numerous others in a way that makes them sound contemporaneous with their idols, not derivative of them. This is impressive enough, but it’s nothing when compared with a musical prowess that is, quite frankly, stunning. All of the members — Gabriel Garcia on vocals and guitar, fellow guitarist Alexander Nunez, bassist Zachary Sandler, and drummer Steven Spence — display amazing proficiency, especially when their ages are taken into account. (All four were still in their teens when Light from Above was recorded.) There are numerous examples throughout the album, such as during the opening of “Warriors,” when Garcia and Nunez rattle off an extended acoustic guitar opening that is layered and complex but executed so naturally by the duo that it sounds effortless. Black Tide’s rhythm section is also tight throughout Light from Above, with some particularly impressive work on the part of Spence. The percussionist turns in a solid performance that contains few frills but provides an unerring foundation for the rest of the band, no matter what the speed; when Garcia and Nunez take flight on their solos, Spence is right there with them. That’s not to discount the contributions of Sandler, who underpins the proceedings with the same blend of precision and flair that drives the guitarists, particularly during the solos of “Shockwave.” With all of that said, the youth of Black Tide is evident from the very beginning, and while this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it is certainly something to note. Instead of aligning themselves to either camp, Iron Maiden stuck to their guns and issued a concept album, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Concept albums had spelled disaster for other metal bands in the past, but this proved not to be the case with Maiden, resulting in what many fans consider their last true classic album (and the last with guitarist Adrian Smith, until their late-’90s reunion). Although the songs are all lyrically tied together by the story of a prophet who tries (unsuccessfully) to warn a village of an impending holocaust, they don’t have to be listened to in succession to be enjoyed — one of the main reasons the album worked so well. A total of four singles were issued in the U.K. (all Top Tens) — “Can I Play With Madness?,” “The Evil That Men Do,” “The Clairvoyant,” and “Infinite Dreams” — which all prove to be the album’s best cuts. But like earlier Maiden albums, this is a complete album — while “Moonchild,” “The Prophecy,” “Only the Good Die Young,” and the epic title track are not as well-known as the singles, they are just as noteworthy. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son marked the end of a golden era for one of metal’s all-time best bands.
